The purpose of this project was to design a children's story book and teaching aid called "The Metropolitan Petting Zoo" that young children would find appealing and engaging. The first step was to make a list of some gentle farm animals that might be found in a real petting zoo, then gather photo reference for the characters to be used as a drawing guide. The next step was to sketch an eye catching, cohesive, playful composition featuring the animals and kids in a simple outdoor environment. For the design, David featured ten different animal characters, and some happy and excited children interacting with the animals. He chose a punchy and simplified illustrative style that would appeal to young children. David's drawing style, illustrative effects, layout, typography and colors successfully combine to compliment the cover of this engaging children's story book.
